WHY do we still light bonfires on November 5 each year? - Ian Hearn, Troedyraur, West Wales ON that night in 1605, a plot was thwarted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I. Bonfires were then set alight across the country to celebrate the safety of the King.
The following year an act of Parliament called The Thanksgiving Act was passed which made it compulsory to celebrate the King's deliverance.See the full content of this document
