9AFTER nagging my husband for years he finally agreed to a new kitchen, which cost a fortune. He laid a cream marfil marble floor. Unfortunately he did not seal it and we had a party and it is now scratched to death. There are also alcohol stains and the shine has been taken off. My new floor is ruined. Is there any way it can be restored? - Dawn Basnett, Liverpool 2 ZENA SAYS: Marble is a porous material which is why it is essential to seal it after fitting. It is also the reason you can remove the stains - so whatever you do, don't seal until it has been cleaned to your satisfaction otherwise you'll seal in the stains.
If you want to take the DIY route, wet the area with a little vodka and leave it to soak in for a few minutes. Sprinkle with talc and cover with kitchen paper and a piece of plastic sheet or cling film. Don't use something that can transfer colour like a carrier bag with writing on. Leave for about 48 hours. The talc will absorb the alcohol stain and can then just be vacuumed or brushed away.See the full content of this document
