NOW is the time to be bold. Britain desperately needs a modernising programme that will see hospitals and schools as a byword for excellence, old people cared for and the young encouraged to be special, daring and exciting.

Labour has a choice. The MPs in the party's depleted ranks can go back to Westminster, plot, grumble and watch the party fall apart. Just as John Major's Tories did after his victory in 1992. Or Tony Blair can wipe the blood off his face and - unencumbered by the need for re-election - force through a dynamic programme of reform we have been promised for almost a decade.
