DISUSED schools and hospitals could be used as makeshift prisons to ease the growing jails crisis.
A list has been drawn up of around 20 sites which could be used for an extra 2,000 inmates, also including former MoD bases. Home Secretary John Reid has pledged to build jails to house 8,000 extra prisoners. But the new buildings could take up to six years to complete. The delay has forced the Home Office to identify other options amid fears the prison population - already near its maximum 80,000 - will rise next year.See the full content of this document
