Summary

KILBEGGAN'S first Saturday evening meeting came within EUR130 of being called off last night when the jockeys' valets demanded that sum and the racecourse refused to pay it. The valets, in addition to looking after the jockeys' equipment, supply all the lead for the weight cloths and so racing could not have taken place without their co-operation. Dave Fox, the senior valet, blamed Horse Racing Ireland for his actions and said that he and his staff should have been consulted about the extra Saturday evening fixtures this year.

He said: "HRI and the racecourses have changed our work practices with these extra meetings. Last year we got EUR130 from the racecourses but this year HRI say I should get it from the jockeys. However they are not getting paid anything extra and I have additional wages to pay. I didn't like doing what I did, but I felt I had to make a stand."
