IT'S always a thrill when it starts snowing hard on your way to a ski resort. The prospect of playing in fresh powder the next day gets the whole bus buzzing with anticipation.

But beware of what you wish for. So much snow fell in the Pyrenees on that chilly winter's day that an avalanche blocked the high pass from France into the tiny state of Andorra. We had to go the long way round, through a scenic chunk of Spain, turning a three- hour coach transfer from Toulouse into a six-hour epic journey.
