AS the Pope lay dying, the process of choosing the next Pope had already begun. The world's Catholic cardinals were gathering in Rome and will start their deliberations 15 days after his death.

In theory, any Roman Catholic man can be Pope - he doesn't even have to be a member of the clergy. In reality, the new Pontiff will be one of the 120 cardinals under the age of 80 who are fit enough to travel.
