YOU can't describe the smell of death - and you can never get it over to youngsters what it was like. The simple words of 108-year- old Harry Patch painted a vivid picture of what it was like to fight in the trenches, 90 years ago in the battle of the Somme.
The exclusive story in the Sunday Mirror last week brought home to me what we owe Harry and all the other soldiers who fought such bloody battles for our country. I agree with Harry that it's a bit late for politicians to be planning a day of commemoration to honour the men of World War I.
