Hotel of the Week: Flemings, Mayfair

Summary

WHERE AND WHY: Youre right on the doorstep of Londons biggest department stores to be first in line for the January sales. Yet you would hardly recognise it as a hotel from the outside. It has been created from several adjoining townhouses dating back to 1730 along Half Moon Lane in Mayfair. Youre also on the fringes of Shepherds Market, where an annual fair was held from about the time that the houses were built. Today, its a quiet corner far from the crowds of Regent or Oxford Streets to sit in the sun nursing a coffee or pint in one of the West Ends most historic neighbourhoods.

COMFORT FACTOR: Rooms and suites are elegant and staying here feels like being in in a grand private home. Two couples (or four girlie shoppers) can take over the rooftop apartment at Flemings for little more than the price of two individual standard rooms. Your own elevator opens in the hallway of this private apartment with a grand lounge, rooftop terrace and fitted-kitchen with all sorts of complementary treats, from choccy biscuits to fruit and drinks.
