Summary

QI OWN a Vauxhall Vectra 2.2 CDX with 17,000 miles which now needs a new catalytic converter. The car has run out of manufacturer's warranty by four months, while the Network Q cover expired at the beginning of February. I have spoken to Vauxhall Customer Care in Luton, but they have no interest in assisting with the cost of the cat. At just 17,000 miles, is this what you should expect from a Vauxhall? Am I being treated fairly? - A. P. Johnson, by email

ACATALYTIC converters should last much longer than 17,000 miles and the replacement cost of this one won't be cheap - I doubt you'll get much change from pounds 500. Unless Vauxhall can prove that the cat's been damaged, they should help with the repair. One thing's for sure - it's definitely not normal wear and tear. I'd contact an independent body like the AA or RAC for a second opinion. I do think it's unprincipled of Vauxhall not to be interested just four months after your warranty has expired.
