PRESIDENT Mary McAleese was forced to abandon plans to fly to Poland last night for the state funeral of tragic President Lech Kaczynski amid fears for her safety.

The President's spokesman said the decision "had been taken out of Mrs McAleese's hands".
"The Air Corps has made a flight safety decision and decided it is better if the President does not travel to Poland," he said.US President Barrack Obama and Britain's Prince Charles also both cancelled last night.
