PRESIDENT Mary McAleese was forced to abandon plans to fly to Poland last night for the state funeral of tragic President Lech Kaczynski amid fears for her safety.

The Air Corps vetoed the plan to fly her to Krakow because of the continuing threat to air travel from ash from the exploding Icelandic volcano.

The President's spokesman said the decision "had been taken out of Mrs McAleese's hands".

"The Air Corps has made a flight safety decision and decided it is better if the President does not travel to Poland," he said.

US President Barrack Obama and Britain's Prince Charles also both cancelled last night. The aborted trips are the latest casualties of the freak ash and dust cloud which has left much of Europe...
