Summary
Q I NEED to lose weight really quickly to be able to squeeze into a dress I bought for a big do coming up. A friend has suggested a crash diet which promises weight loss of half a stone in a week. Is this safe?
A NOT really - a crash diet is usually less than 1,000 calories a day and will probably result in rapid weight loss in the short term, but will probably be lacking in essential nutrients - not just protein, fat or carbohydrates but vitamins and minerals too. Crash diets tend to cause the loss of lean tissue, but when the diet has finished, and normal eating is resumed, the weight is often put back on as fat rather than muscle, and this becomes harder to lose long term. More gradual, sensible weight loss of around 1-2lbs a week encourages the loss of fat rather than lean tissue which is less likely to be regained as long as a sensible eating plan is maintained. If you haven't time to drop a dress size through a sensible eating plan, then the best advice is to buy or borrow another outfit.See the full content of this document
