ADespite their popularity, high protein, low-carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet wont make you forever slim and healthy. To be fair, it will probably help you lose weight quickly in the short- term and may act as a jump-start to a healthier and more sustainable way of losing and maintaining weight. There are some serious draw- backs to the long- term use of this type of diet, however. Without carbs, your body begins to burn protein and fat, which produces toxic waste products called ketones. In the long run these ketones can be damaging to some of the bodys vital organs. Research shows high protein diets can cause bone loss. Also check out the side effects: high protein diets, which by definition are low in fibre, can cause constipation; the production of ketones produces bad breath; and the lack of carbs, the brains preferred fuel, can lead to irritability not exactly qualities that make for a great wedding day!
