Summary


THE sight of Aung San Suu Kyi greeting Buddhist monks outside her house in Burma - surrounded by riot police - woke the world up to the crisis in the country.

But I can't help feeling like we could have done more over the years. That's why I was delighted Gordon Brown has pledged to stand up for them. We should tell British companies such as Rolls-Royce to get out of Burma - as we did in South Africa. If France continues to veto EU sanctions, we should not be afraid to go ahead on our own. The war in Iraq has been a disaster, one which we need to deal with, but the mistakes made there cannot be allowed to stop us from making common cause with people under oppression.
