MORE than 3,000 people were killed yesterday when an earthquake struck a disaster-prone island in Indonesia.

The quake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, hit just before 6am as people slept, flattening the ancient city of Yogyakarta in Java and destroying roads and bridges in just 60 seconds.
